Ed has worked in a number of schools and local authorities over the last 20 years.  He was a teacher in 2 secondary schools in Gloucestershire, before moving back to Wales to take up an ICT adviser post in Newport.  This involved working with primary, secondary and special schools, to substantially improve both standards in information technology and the use of ICT to improve learning and teaching.  From 2001 he took on the role of school improvement adviser for primary and secondary schools, working with headteachers and governing bodies in order to raise standards of teaching and learning.   He also led training for the Building Learning Power programme in both primary and secondary schools and qualified as an Estyn Inspector (Secondary) in 2002.

In 2007, Ed was appointed as Senior Adviser with Caerphilly LA leading on the management of the NQT programme, Governor Support Service and all Welsh Government school improvement grants.  The major role however, was to improve the use of data in order to inform school improvement.   This involved working with senior and middle leaders in both primary and secondary schools throughout the borough, on data analysis, pupil tracking and self evaluation.
