Letter to headteachers of nurseries and primary schools, and leaders of non-maintained settings - Huw Lewis
26/06/2015
Dear Colleague,

I hope you will by now be aware of the very positive evaluation of the Foundation Phase which was published on 13 May. This is a good time to take stock of where we are on the Foundation Phase and for me to set out our future approach, particularly in light of the recommendations from Professor Donaldson’s report Successful Futures: Independent Review of Curriculum and Assessment. Arrangements in Wales and the changes being introduced in 2015/16. The report can be viewed on the Welsh Government website at www.gov.wales/topics/educationandskills/schoolshome/curriculuminwales/curriculum
-for-wales/?lang=en

The attached document outlines the next steps we are taking to further improve learning and assessment for children within the Foundation Phase. I hope you will agree that what I have set out presents a clear picture of my commitment to the Foundation Phase. I hope we can all continue to work positively together to ensure that we build on what I believe is a very strong basis and put in place the best possible early education for our children.

Yours
