Governor Support & Development

Strengthening School Governance in South East Wales
It is an exciting time to be a governor in Wales with the many changes in education, a new curriculum, new assessment arrangements and new teaching standards.
School Governors are the largest voluntary workforce in the Wales with over 23,000 governors working together with headteachers to set the strategic visions for their schools, effectively managing the implementation of education reform and overall raising standards for pupils in the region.
The Governor Support & Development Team provides support to School Governors, Headteachers and Local Authorities to ensure that the organisation and management of governing bodies are effective and meet both statutory requirements and national priorities.

The team provides the following:
  • Professional Clerk Service
  • Recruitment & Retention of Clerks
  • Mandatory Clerks Training
  • Clerking Network
  • Statutory Committee and Specialist Governance Support
  • Clerk Statutory Processes
  • Mentor Chairs
  • Bespoke Training & Support for schools facing challenges
  • EAS Excellence in Governance Framework
  • Mandatory Training
  • Cluster Strategic Governance Training
  • National Model for Governing Body Self Evaluation
  • Training on National Priorities (Pupil Wellbeing, and Equity in Education)
Governors come from all walks of life and there is no requirement for experience or qualifications in education, governing bodies would welcome new governors with diverse backgrounds. Governing Bodies meet at least once per term, many meet more frequently.  As a governor your role would be to bring an external perspective to the development of the school, either as a parent or a member of the community.
